In Vedic astrology, the birth chart is divided into twelve sections called bhavas (houses). Each house governs a specific area of life. When planets occupy or aspect a house, they bring their energy — benefic or malefic — into that domain.
Understanding the houses is foundational. Here is a concise guide to each one.
The Twelve Houses
1st House — Self and Body (Lagna) The self, physical appearance, constitution, and general vitality. The 1st house is the most important in the chart — the foundation upon which everything else is interpreted.
2nd House — Wealth and Family (Dhana) Accumulated wealth, speech, early family life, food, and values. Planets here often influence how you earn and hold money, as well as your relationship with your immediate family.
3rd House — Courage and Siblings (Sahaja) Courage, communication, short journeys, siblings, and skills learned through effort. A strong 3rd house often indicates writing ability, boldness, and entrepreneurial drive.
4th House — Home and Mother (Sukha) The home, real estate, mother, emotional security, vehicles, and inner happiness. The 4th house describes what gives you a sense of belonging and rootedness.
5th House — Creativity and Children (Putra) Creativity, children, romance, intelligence, past-life merit (purva punya), and spiritual practice. This is the house of joy and what the soul delights in.
6th House — Health and Service (Ari) Health, enemies, service, debts, and daily work. The 6th house can indicate illness when afflicted, but also great capacity for healing and problem-solving.
7th House — Partnership (Kalatra) Marriage, business partnerships, open enemies, and foreign travel. The 7th house describes the kind of partner we attract and the nature of our significant relationships.
8th House — Transformation (Ayu) Longevity, transformation, hidden things, inheritance, occult knowledge, and sudden change. The 8th house governs what is concealed and what requires deep excavation.
9th House — Dharma and Fortune (Dharma) Philosophy, higher learning, father, religion, long journeys, grace, and fortune. A well-placed 9th house often brings protection and spiritual fortune throughout life.
10th House — Career and Status (Karma) Career, public reputation, authority, and one's role in society. The 10th house shows where your efforts produce the most visible fruit.
11th House — Gains (Labha) Income, gains, elder siblings, social networks, and the fulfillment of desires. The 11th house shows what flows toward you and through which connections.
12th House — Liberation and Loss (Vyaya) Isolation, foreign lands, spiritual liberation (moksha), loss, and hidden expenses. The 12th house governs where energy disperses — and where we may find profound stillness.

No house operates in isolation. The lord of the 7th house placed in the 12th, for example, creates a specific yoga that a skilled astrologer will interpret carefully.
